Our Coaches

Steve Herin

Coach Herin is a native of Prince William County, VA where he excelled as a versatile defenseman for Potomac High School.  Upon graduation, he moved on to play college lacrosse at Division III Shenandoah University, where he was a four-year letter-winner.  He began his coaching career in Loudoun County, VA as an assistant at Freedom High School before moving over to Loudoun County High School.  As County’s defensive coordinator, Coach Herin engineered some of the toughest defenses in all of Virginia over a five-year span, helping the team win multiple district and region championships, culminating in a VHSL state title game appearance.  Coach Herin has more than a decade of experience coaching youth, high school, and travel club lacrosse of all age groups, having coached previously for Cavalier, Virginia Lacrosse Club (VLC), and Top Caliber, as well as Shenandoah Valley Youth Lacrosse.  Coach Herin has coached dozens of players who have gone on to play lacrosse at the college level, including two professional lacrosse players in the PLL.

Steven Phillips

Coach Phillips is originally from Shawnee OK, where he was a multi-sport athlete in High School. Recruited into coaching shortly after his transition into the Winchester area in 2011, he has been a staple of the lacrosse scene in Winchester since. He joined Handley Lacrosse as a defensive assistant in 2019, serving in that position before taking over Head Coaching duties in 2021. At the helm, Coach Phillips has led Handley to a 29-10 record instilling a high level of consistent play the right way. Coach Phillips brings a demonstrated track record of moving players on to the collegiate level, developing athletes, and creating opportunities to improve lives through lacrosse as well as club experience with Hammers Lacrosse. He has also served as Vice President of Shenandoah Valley Youth Lacrosse, working to facilitate and grow the sport in an administration position from 2018-2023.

Dave Colangelo

Coach Colangelo hails from Syracuse, NY, where he played football, basketball, and lacrosse at Fayetteville-Manlius High School.  He played lacrosse and football at Division III Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA.  He was a multiple Academic All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection and four-year letter-winner.  Coach Colangelo began his coaching career as an assistant at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, VA, before relocating to Northern Virginia.  His 15+ year head coaching career includes stops at John R. Lewis HS, Loudoun County HS, and Herndon HS.  His teams have won multiple Virginia High School league district and regional titles, and he was twice named the Dulles District and VHSL North Region Coach of the Year, as well as a LoCo Sports and US Lacrosse Coach of the Year nod.  He also has extensive experience coaching travel club at the youth and high school levels, having previously coached for RebeLax, FuZe, 3D Mid-Atlantic, Cavalier, Virginia Lacrosse Club (VLC), and True Loudoun.  He has coached over 75 players who have gone on to continue their careers collegiately at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels, including four All-Americans, four District/Region Players of the Year, and numerous All-State, All-Region, and All-District selections.
